"You know what I believe? I remember in college I was taking this math class, this really great math class taught by this tiny old woman. She was talking about fast Fourier transforms and she stopped mid-sentence and said, 'Sometimes it seems the universe wants to be noticed.' That's what I believe. I believe the universe wants to be noticed. I think the universe is improbably biased toward consciousness, that it rewards intelligence in part because the universe enjoys its elegance being observed. And who am I, living in the middle of history, to tell the universe that it - or my observation of it - is temporary?"

Dream on.
Too much whisky (spelled Whisky!)
Does a waterbug feel the same? A duck? A tree?
"...it rewards intelligence in part because the universe enjoys its elegance being observed."
Lovely, just lovely!
Math induced wonderment ; it'll happen.
@Soubry: I will.
@ Adullamite: I do not partake of fine spirits. Whisky is Scottish in origin. Whiskey is American English.
@Cosmo: I've certainly enjoyed the elegance of a tree, a duck, but a waterbug? well, I tend to squash those bugs. I consider these things to be part of the elegant universe.
@SL: Oh finally, someone who understands the beauty of this sentiment! Thank you.
@goatman: I guess math is a key component to the elegant universe, which is a shame as I never really understood math.

Math is simply an attempt to predict the future. You can guess all you want whether the brake disk on your car will crack under thermal shock of applying brake at -20° F or you can build a formula which will include all of the variables: coefficient of the metal expansion, thickness, diameter, pressure, heat dissipation, and weight of loaded vehicle and do it right. Its called engineering. Of course some testing may be helpful just in case you guessed wrong! That's called liability protection.
Or you can just do your checkbook.
goatman ~ LOL !! I gave up on balancing my checkbook years ago ...

now that is just plain cool. I believe that, too
Yeah! Pauline! ~ Another feminine perspective. I've been drowning in the waves of Left Brain thinking over here! Glad you stopped by.

That would make a neat book title:
"Drowning in the waves of left-brain thinking" . You could present all of the cases where right-brain thinking fixed your engine! Ha
goatman - that's a creative idea! you were using your right-brain thinking cap - yahoo!!
