"I don't know what I'm doing most of the time. There's a certain humor in realizing that. I can never figure out the kind of tie to put on in the morning. I don't have any strategy or plan to get through the day. It is literally a problem for me to decide which side of the bed to get out on. These are staggering problems. I remember talking to this Trappist monk in a monastery. He's been there twelve years. A pretty severe regime. I expressed my admiration for him and he said 'Leonard, I've been here twelve years and every morning, I have to decide whether I'm going to stay or not.' I knew exactly what he was talking about."

I definitely recommend following the link to Sabotage Times and reading the entire interview. Candid and funny.

What gets you up?
What keeps you up?

They are not dirty questions, today at least.

I find it oddly comforting that even Leonard Cohen doesn't know what he's doing most of the time! Great post Red Dirt Girl. I look forward to reading the entire interview.

Coincidentally, I have just gotten his newest album "Old Ideas". New stuff, very retrospective:

I caught the darkness
Drinking from your cup
I caught the darkness
Drinking from your cup
I said: Is this contagious?
you said: Just drink it up

I got no future
I know my days are few
The present's not that pleasant
Just a lot of things to do
I thought the past would last me
But the darkness got that too

I should have seen it coming
It was right behind your eyes
You were young and it was summer
I just had to take a dive
Winning you was easy
But darkness was the prize.

I used to love the rainbow
I used to love the view
I loved the early morning
I'd pretend that it was new
But I caught the darkness baby
And I got it worse than you.

From "Darkness"

Hey . . . where is that camera?

Adullamite ~ are you deliberately being disingenuous?

Cosmo ~ my answers aren't very complex. The dogs get me up. The job keeps me up. Otherwise, I'd be permanently bedridden!

Hi SL!

I'm glad you enjoyed and hope you liked the interview as well. It is comforting to know that we are all truly in this (confusing life) together.

I love that man and share that feeling of not knowing (as much as one can with a job and kids) and yet a feeling of wonder. My head begins to throb if I think too much. But as he says, " I don't think anybody really knows what they're doing at any point."

Wisdom seems to begin in realizing that.

Every morning I have to make a conscious decision to participate in my own life. That doesn't seem that funny until after I get going. Then a sense of humor is absolutey indispensible.

Hi Mr. Wit ~ Indeed, we are all in the same boat, I think.

Hi cowboy ~ I know exactly what you mean - though you definitely have me beat in the humor department. I tend to take life so seriously .... I suppose I could lighten up a bit.
