on living a passionate life ...

Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr mid-kiss
in the 1953, Academy Award-winning film 'From Here to Eternity'

" Passion. It lies in all of us. Sleeping, waiting, and though unwanted, unbidden, it will stir, open its jaws and howl. It speaks to us, guides us. Passion rules us all. And we obey. What other choice do we have? Passion is the source of our finest moments. The joy of love, the clarity of hatred, the ecstasy of grief. It hurts sometimes more than we can bear. If we could live without passion, maybe we'd know some kind of peace. But we would be hollow. Empty room, shuttered and dank. Without passion, we'd be truly dead."

Lovely quote -- I so like "open its jaws and howl." How strong the howl can feel, how desperate, how full and, sometimes, how empty.

Lovely comment, Mr. Wit.
I like the metaphor of the empty room, shuttered and dank ... there's a poem in there ...!

Good grief! Can you imagine a life without passion?

Even if it only stays with you a short while, it lights a flame to illuminate the rest of your life

I hate to rain on any parade, but I have always viewed this movie scene as un realistic. Of course it is only kissing, but the next obvious step can be painful in that sand -- if you know what I mean ??

"Burt and Deborah disagreed strongly on who was going to eat the oyster.... When Burt popped it into his mouth, Deborah tried to retrieve it with her tongue, and they wrestled for some time.
However, the suction became so great that they could not separate, and paramedics had to insert nasal oxygen tubes to maintain the couple. After a tense few hours, a firecrew was called, using "the jaws of life" to pry the couple apart.
